'China has become a global leader in electric vehicles and a key driving force for digitalization.' Nicholas Peter, the chief financial officer of German BMW Group and the director in charge of China affairs, said in an exclusive interview with Xinhua News Agency recently that in the next few years, China will be the world's largest new energy vehicle market, and it is also the best choice and best partner in BMW's transformation towards electrification, digitalization and sustainable development.

At present, BMW Group is accelerating electrification. Peter said that in 2022, BMW plans to double the global sales of pure electric vehicles from 2021. The realization of this plan is inseparable from China's new energy vehicle market.

In 2021, the sales of new energy vehicles in China increased by about 1.6 times year-on-year. Optimistic about this situation, Peter set the proportion of pure electric vehicles in BMW's total sales in the Chinese market at 25% in 2025.

Peter told reporters that BMW 'takes China as its home' and accelerates the transformation of electrification. In the first quarter of this year, BMW's sales of pure electric vehicles in the Chinese market were three times that of the same period last year. On May 5th, the brand-new BMW i3 specially designed for the Chinese market was officially rolled off the assembly line at Rida factory in Shenyang production base. At the same time, BMW is also expanding its electric vehicle product portfolio in the Chinese market. At present, BMW offers five pure electric vehicles to Chinese customers, and it will reach about 13 by 2023.

According to a research report released by PricewaterhouseCoopers Germany recently, in the first quarter of this year, the global sales of pure electric vehicles increased by 107% year-on-year, 'mainly due to the Chinese market'. In this quarter, pure electric vehicles sold in the Chinese market accounted for two-thirds of global electric vehicle sales. The report also shows that German automakers have made remarkable achievements in the field of pure electric vehicles in the Chinese market, and the market share of German automakers in China's pure electric vehicles has increased to 4%, double that of the same period last year.

Peter said that in the long run, China will remain the largest automobile market in the world. He said that the Chinese government's policies and measures to promote consumption are 'very important to the whole market'.
