Affected by epidemic situation and other factors, China's automobile exports have slowed down since March. According to the latest data from the General Administration of Customs, in April, China exported 171,000 automobiles, up 10.3% year-on-year, which was significantly slower than the high growth rate of 57.2% in the previous March.

The industry believes that as enterprises gradually resume work and production, the industrial chain supply chain tends to be stable, and the overseas market of Chinese automobiles is gradually returning to normal level.

Many factors lead to export slowdown

In 2021, China's automobile exports exceeded 2 million, making it the third largest automobile exporter in the world.

After entering 2022, China's automobile export volume reached a new monthly high of 231,000 in January, an increase of 87.7% over the same period of last year. However, according to the data released by the General Administration of Customs, China exported 200,000 cars in March, a year-on-year increase of 33.6%; In April, 171,000 cars were exported, up 10.3% year-on-year, and the growth rate decreased for two consecutive months.

The main reason for the slowdown in exports is that the epidemic situation spreads more and more, which has blocked the supply chain of the industrial chain. Since March, many automakers and parts manufacturers in Shanghai and Changchun, two important automobile production bases in China, have reduced or stopped production. For example, FAW Group's five major vehicle factories in Changchun, BMW Brilliance's factory in Shenyang, several factories in Shanghai under SAIC and Tesla's Shanghai factory all announced the suspension of production.

Cui Dongshu, Secretary-General of the National Passenger Car Market Information Association, said that due to the epidemic situation, there was a shortage of imported parts and components, and suppliers of domestic parts and components systems in the Yangtze River Delta region could not supply goods in time, and some even stopped work completely. In addition, the logistics efficiency was reduced and the transportation time was out of control, resulting in a prominent problem of poor automobile production. In April, the production of five major car companies in Shanghai decreased by 75% compared with that in March, the production of major joint-venture car companies in Changchun decreased by 54%, and that of other regions decreased by 38% as a whole. The national radiation effect of the parts system in Shanghai became prominent.

Chen Shihua, deputy secretary-general of China Association of Automobile Manufacturers, also said that since April, the industrial chain supply chain of the automobile industry has experienced a severe test. Some enterprises have stopped production, logistics and transportation have been greatly hindered, and the production and supply capacity has fallen sharply.

In addition to the pressure of production and logistics, the international complex environment also brings impact to automobile exports. The internationalization research team of the Automotive Industry Policy Research Department of China Automotive Research Institute pointed out that at present, the situation in Russia and Ukraine is complicated and changeable, and the western sanctions are intensifying, resulting in many problems such as logistics delay, raw material price increase, and parts supply cut-off, which have impacted the domestic automobile product export and industrial chain development.

The advantages of new energy are still outstanding

On May 24th, the rail-sea intermodal train carrying 24 complete sets of new energy vehicles left Liuzhou South Logistics Center, Guangxi, and was shipped to Jakarta, Indonesia via Qinzhou Port.

Since last year, China's automobile exports have increased greatly, especially the volume and price of new energy vehicles. In 2021, China's new energy vehicles exported 588,000 units, and this year's exports showed a sustained strong trend. Customs data show that in the first quarter, the number of new energy vehicles exported reached 179,700, a year-on-year increase of 278.7%; The export value was USD 4.621 billion, a year-on-year increase of 252.9%.

Thanks to the advantages of electrification and intelligence, China's new energy vehicles are much smoother than traditional fuel vehicles in moving to developed countries. In 2021, the export growth rate of China's new energy vehicles to Europe exceeded 200%, and that to North America exceeded 100%.

China's new energy vehicles go to sea, not only in terms of sales and services, but also in terms of global layout such as overseas factories. The relevant person in charge of BYD told the reporter that up to now, BYD has six overseas production bases and set up more than 30 industrial parks around the world.

Zhang Yongwei, vice chairman and secretary general of China Electric Vehicle committee of 100, said that the explosive growth of new energy vehicle exports is the result of a variety of factors. First of all, China attaches great importance to coordinating the enthusiasm of traditional automobile enterprises and electric automobile enterprises, fully balancing the relationship between the government and the market, and greatly promoting the cooperation of electric automobile industry development in management departments, scientific research, energy and other fields. Secondly, on the basis of properly handling various technical routes, independent brand car companies have not only achieved key technological breakthroughs in electric vehicles such as power batteries, but also successfully achieved 'lane change and overtaking' in the field of high-level automatic driving by virtue of the advantages of fast product development and close contact with users of domestic smart chip companies. Thirdly, thanks to the timely response of major automobile companies to consumers' diversified demands, Chinese independent brands have focused on different segments and developed various diversified and multifunctional products to meet consumers' diversified demands for electric vehicles.

Maintain quality and insist on 'going out'

'In the future sales of Changan, the overseas market share will exceed 30%.' Zhu Huarong, chairman of Changan Automobile, expressed such determination. In the first four months of this year, Changan Automobile's export sales accounted for 13% of the total output, compared with 5% last year.

Cui Dongshu said that at present, enterprises in automobile industry chain are gradually changing from 'fire-fighting' emergency response to normal high-toughness supply chain management. It is necessary to rebuild supply chain confidence, stabilize policy expectations, and establish a stronger information sharing system, so that China's automobile supply chain system can remain at the core of the world automobile industry, and Chinese automobiles can have a larger share in the world.

Mastering the core technology adds confidence to the 'going out' of Chinese cars. In terms of new energy auto parts, at present, the drive motor technology of Chinese auto companies is basically synchronized with the foreign level, and most of them are close to the international advanced level; In the aspect of motor control, the key technologies of core components are basically mastered. In terms of power batteries, Chinese companies are at the forefront.

New energy is a great opportunity for China to become a powerful automobile industry country. Cui Dongshu believes that domestic car companies should strengthen the resilience of supply chain and improve their strategic planning, management and execution capabilities. It is necessary to establish an effective risk monitoring capability in the existing supply chain system, so as to quickly and accurately assess the impact of major risks on the sales volume and profits of enterprises, and formulate corresponding emergency measures; It is necessary to improve the corresponding core competencies, including supply chain strategic design, dynamic integrated supply chain planning, end-to-end supply chain data transparency and collaboration, and operation mode optimization.

The car 'going out' needs to be stable and quality-improved. Zhang Jianping, director of the Regional Economic Cooperation Research Center of the Ministry of Commerce, said that under the open competitive environment, the competitiveness of the automobile industry will also be improved. The automobile industry should further enhance its brand reputation, increase the added value of technology and products, and strengthen its independent innovation capability. It should be noted that in the process of expanding overseas markets, automobile enterprises should fully combine investment with trade, make good use of domestic foreign trade policies, especially in some parts and components fields, and make full use of the policy support of high-standard free trade agreements agreed by China and some countries and regions.
