As the world's largest new energy vehicle market, hybrid electric vehicles, pure electric vehicles and even hydrogen-fueled vehicles are not only the 'golden name card' for China's export and a new choice for domestic market consumption upgrading, but also accelerating to become a new engine for high-quality economic development.

Under the epidemic situation, in January 2022, the production and sales of new energy vehicles in China were 452,000 and 431,000, respectively, up by 1.3 times and 1.4 times year-on-year, and the export increased by 5.4 times year-on-year.

'In the past, foreign cars were sold to China intact, and then there gradually appeared models specially tailored for the Chinese market. Now, with the increase of China's automobile export scale, Chinese automobile companies can even customize' global models' for overseas markets, leading the trend of new energy of global automobiles.' Yu De, assistant to the president of SAIC, general manager of SAIC International Business Department and general manager of SAIC International, said.

Yu De introduced that SAIC aimed at the 'explosive period' when the European automobile market shifted from fuel vehicles to new energy vehicles. This year, MG EH32, a new energy vehicle specially customized by SAIC for overseas markets, will be launched in Europe, the birthplace of automobile industry. In 2022, Europe will take the lead in advancing to SAIC's first overseas regional market of 100,000 vehicles.

Domestic new energy vehicles are not only popular overseas, but also the 'active choice' of domestic consumers. Cui Dongshu, secretary general of the National Passenger Car Market Information Association, said that new energy vehicles have moved from the edge of the industry to the core position of the main sales models, and the market has shifted from 'policy-oriented' to 'product-driven'.

According to the data of the Association, the retail penetration rate of new energy passenger cars reached 14.8% in 2021, which means that one out of every seven cars sold is a new energy vehicle, which is significantly higher than the penetration rate of 5.8% in 2020.

New energy vehicles are still accelerating the upgrading of the whole industrial chain. Along the Yangtze River Economic Belt, an important industrial corridor in China, from Chang 'an Automobile in Chongqing, Dongfeng Automobile in Hubei, Weilai Automobile in Anhui, Shanghai Automobile and Tesla Automobile in Shanghai, automobile OEMs have driven the gathering of more industries in the upstream and downstream, forming industrial clusters driven by new energy vehicles.

Take Tesla Giga Shanghai as an example. This Tesla first overseas super factory delivered 59,845 vehicles in January this year, of which the export volume exceeded 40,000. Shanghai Super Factory continues to be Tesla's main export center. In 2021, Tesla Giga Shanghai delivered 484,130 vehicles annually, accounting for 51.7% of Tesla's global production capacity in 2021.

Tesla introduced that at present, more than 90% of parts and components in Tesla Giga Shanghai have been localized. This not only promotes the vigorous development of the new energy automobile industry in the Lingang New Area of Shanghai Free Trade Zone, where the super factory is located, but also enables many auto parts enterprises to further lay out in the Yangtze River Delta region.

On February 19th, a few kilometers away from Tesla Giga Shanghai, Contemporary Amperex Technology Co., Limited, one of Tesla's suppliers, started construction of Ruiting battery base project and intelligent technology project, which is expected to be completed and put into operation within one year.

In the Lingang New Area of Shanghai Free Trade Zone, the total industrial output value in 2021 will reach 255 billion yuan, of which new energy vehicles will become its first billion-dollar industry. With the acceleration of the Yangtze River Delta integration strategy, around Tesla Giga Shanghai, many auto parts enterprises have formed large-scale industrial clusters in the Yangtze River Delta regions such as Suzhou, Ningbo, Nantong, Wuxi, Nanjing and Changzhou.

The relevant person in charge of China Association of Automobile Manufacturers introduced that with the continuous improvement of China's automobile industry chain and further optimization of industrial support, new energy vehicles have entered a new stage of accelerated development. Sky survey data shows that there are more than 420,000 new energy vehicle-related enterprises in China, and about 170,000 new energy vehicle-related enterprises will be registered in 2021.

The New Energy Vehicle Industry Development Plan (2021-2035) proposes that by 2025, the sales of new energy vehicles will reach about 20% of the total sales of new vehicles, and by 2035, pure electric vehicles will become the mainstream of new sales vehicles. Hou Fushen, deputy secretary-general of the Chinese Society of Automotive Engineering and executive director of the International Institute of Automotive Engineering Technology Innovation Strategy, said, 'The actual speed of the market may exceed the planned level'.

In 2021, in the face of the complicated and changeable internal and external economic situation and the pressure from the supply chain, China sold 3.521 million new energy vehicles, ranking first in the world for seven consecutive years; The export of new energy vehicles was 426,000, a year-on-year increase of 291.4%.
