“Our goal is to help build a global Hydrogen society by 2040,”said Zheng Yixuan, chairman of Hyundai Motor Group, at the Hydrogen Wave global launch event on Sept. 7

“In Hyundai’s vision, hydrogen will be used in all areas of life and industry, such as our homes, offices and factories, with the ambitious goal of making it easy for ‘everyone, everything, everywhere.’”

2028, Hyundai’s commercial vehicles all carry hydrogen fuel cell systems, and by 2040, hydrogen will be used not only for transportation, but for a wider range of industries and applications

In the more than 20 years since the development of the hydrogen fuel cell vehicle (FCEV) began in 1998, modern cars have reduced the cost of hydrogen fuel cell systems by nearly 98% .

In 2013, the world’s first mass produced hydrogen Fuel Cell vehicle, the FCEV  , shook the industry; in 2018, a new generation of hydrogen Fuel Cell SUV NEXO; in 2020, the world’s first hydrogen Fuel Cell heavy truck XCIENT Fuel Cell officially launched.

Hyundai Motor Group has announced that it will start in the field of commercial vehicles, introducing a full range of new commercial vehicles such as hydrogen fuel cells and electric buses and heavy trucks to the global market, 2028 is the world’s first manufacturer of hydrogen fuel cell systems for all commercial vehicles.

By 2030, Hyundai Motor aims to match the price of a hydrogen fuel cell vehicle with a pure electric vehicle, ensuring price competitiveness.

By 2040, hydrogen will be used not just for transport, but for a wider range of industries and sectors, and Hyundai is committed to making it easy for “Everyone, everything, everywhere”.

Recently, China’s five ministries and departments issued a notice on starting the demonstration and application of fuel cell vehicles, making the three urban agglomerations of Beijing, Shanghai and Guangdong the first to be selected as key areas for the demonstration of hydrogen fuel cell vehicles.

Hyundai Motor Group set up its first overseas production and sales base for hydrogen fuel cells in Guangzhou in March. It is also the first large-scale hydrogen fuel cell system production plant in China, named “HTWO Guangzhou”. In the future, the world’s best selling hydrogen fuel cell vehicle NEXO will also be introduced to China as soon as possible.

Hyundai Motor Group: 2030 hydrogen fuel cell vehicle on the price of pure electric vehicles

In the commercial vehicle segment, the world’s first mass produced hydrogen Fuel Cell heavy duty vehicle, the Xcient Cell, is being upgraded and is developing a tractor based on the hydrogen Fuel Cell heavy duty vehicle, which is scheduled to be released at 2023. Meanwhile, Hyundai Motor Group plans to aggressively expand into Europe, where it sells 400,000 medium and large commercial vehicles a year, based on a new generation of hydrogen fuel cell technology.

Facing the huge market demand of 7 million commercial vehicles by 2030, Hyundai Motor Group plans to develop a customized hydrogen fuel cell vehicle with a length of 5-7 meters. At the press conference, Hyundai Motor Group also put forward a vision for the future of hydrogen mobile travel, including hydrogen-powered intelligent unmanned transport vehicles, high-performance sports cars, emergency rescue vehicles and other automotive applications.

Hydrogen-powered intelligent Trailer Drone debuts as a completely new concept vehicle, a fully self-driving container transportation system, powered by a hydrogen fuel cell system, two intelligent unmanned transportation platforms, the E-bogie. The number of hydrogen storage tanks can be tailored to ensure a range of more than 1,000 km on a single charge.

Hydrogen fuel cell technology also applies to high performance vehicles, and Hyundai Motor Group has developed the Vision FK, a hydrogen powered hybrid sports car concept. The first hydrogen fuel cell vehicle to combine a hydrogen fuel cell energy converter with a high power, rear wheel drive, plug in PE power system, the Vision FK has a maximum output of more than 500 kw, 0 ~ 100 km/h acceleration time less than 4 seconds, 20 minutes can be filled with hydrogen, the maximum range of more than 600 km.

Rescue Drone is a new concept vehicle that uses hydrogen fuel cells to drive itself remotely, to be used in fire and Rescue operations, and has an independent steering system that allows for in-situ steering and “Crab”driving, and can be installed in the vehicle outside the drone transmission of the image mission, a single full hydrogen range of up to 450 ~ 500 km.

H Moving Station is a heavy vehicle equipped with hydrogen fuel cell vehicle hydrogenation equipment. The mobile station can charge up to 25 Nexo hydrogen fuel cell systems at a time, providing a convenient charging experience in areas where the number of stations is limited or where they are under repair.

The RHGV (Rescue Hydrogen Generator Vehicle) can be used to recharge and Rescue vehicles in remote and rugged areas. It can also be used for single-phase 220V and three-phase 380V power supply.
Nexo’s existing hydrogen fuel cell system will be replaced by a third generation hydrogen fuel cell system currently under development, with 100KW and 200kW power versions planned for market at 2023. Compared to current hydrogen fuel cell systems, the new 100kW hydrogen fuel cell system is 30% smaller, making it easier to adapt to different vehicle models and applications. The 200kW version is similar in size to Nexo’s hydrogen fuel cell system, but has a twice as much power output.

In 2018, Nexo’s second generation hydrogen fuel cell system achieved 5,000 hours and 160,000 kilometers of warranty comparable to the diesel locomotive. The third generation hydrogen fuel cell is targeted at passenger vehicles with a warranty of 500,000 km and a price reduction of more than 50% compared to the second generation hydrogen fuel cell system. This is the key to achieving the 2030 hydrogen fuel cell vehicle (FCEV) price competitiveness comparable to the pure electric vehicle (Bev) goal.

In addition, Hyundai Motor Group also unveiled a new energy module system. The energy module system can be stacked with 100kW modules to form a series of 500kW or 1MW (MW) power output system, which is very suitable for emergency power supply system of large ships or IT companies. At the same time, a “Flat”hydrogen fuel cell system, with an overall height of 25cm, can be used for customized PBV models, MPV models, buses and trams and other transport equipment.
